Summer Fun in Istria

Istria, Croatia’s heart shaped peninsula at the head of the Adriatic, is combining an impressive selection of sport, gastronomic delicacies, world class wines and the opportunity to enjoy Istrian culture, this summer.


With events all summer for everyone, holidaymakers can choose from polo tournaments, wine events, as well as film and music festivals.


Istria’s Open Wine Cellar Day – 27th May

Whether a fine wine connoisseur or an inquisitive visitor yet to become a wine lover, returning for its 19th year, the Open Wine Cellar Day will see more than 80 wine makers open the gates of their realms and from morning until evening, offer the best they have. A tradition throughout Istria’s north western region this festival entwines wine tasting with magical stories about the emergence of wine and its tradition.


With over 100 quality wine makers spread throughout this small peninsula, even the locals are spoilt for choice. Reflecting both the diverse climate and soil on which they are grown, these phenomenal wines have a range of native grape varieties, including the most famous; Istrian Malvasia. And in addition to being award winning, wine cellars are usually a family business each with their own unique story rooted in tradition and history they invite their guests to discover.


Lighthouse Festival 30th May – 3rd June

Covering four days of electronic underground music, the Lighthouse Festival will return to Istria’s thriving tourist resort Tar-Vabriga nearby Porec. Attracting 4,000 guests and showcasing 40 performers, the Lighthouse Festival offers electronic enthusiasts a festival with a difference. Set amongst the stunning backdrop of the Lanterna Peninsula, partygoers can enjoy an exciting programme of beach performances, boat parties and pool parties.


Rovinj Beach Polo Cup - 7th – 10th June

Transforming the fishing town of Rovinj this June is The Rovinj Beach Polo Cup. Located on Croatia’s western coast, Rovinj will be transformed into a magnificent playing field, welcoming professional polo teams from across the globe to compete in the first, and only, sand polo tournament in this part of the world; The Rovinj Beach Polo Cup.


Whilst polo destinations such as Dubai, New York and Miami have long been glorified by sport enthusiasts, The Rovinj Beach Polo Cup places Rovinj as a key destination to visit on the sporting polo calendar. Offering visitors a unique and refreshed programme of both daytime and evening matches as well as a sensational evening line up of entertainment, this year the Polo Arena will welcome international star Sophie Ellis Bexter to the stage.


The Pula Film Festival 14th – 22nd July 

An inevitable cultural event for Pula and the oldest film festival in Croatia, The Pula Film Festival will return this July for its 65th anniversary. Set beneath starry skies, the festivals programme takes place at various locations throughout the city including Pula’s emblematic monument, Pula Arena - one of the best-preserved amphitheatres in the Roman world and the sixth largest of those still standing today.


The most visited cultural event in the Republic of Croatia, the festival attracts more than 73,000 visitors and showcases a diverse collection of long and short films with programmes fit for all the family made up of Croatian, International, children and youth categories.


A stunning backdrop of Medieval hilltop towns, crystalline waters and rolling green fields Istria is a heart-shaped peninsula on the northern end of Croatia's Adriatic coastline.
